Grab a camera, call some friends, and make a one-minute movie this weekend to win two free all-access passes to the 10th annual deadCENTER Film Festival!
deadCENTER is holding three monthly competitions leading into this year’s fest, challenging filmmakers everywhere to create a short film one minute long, based on a theme. In defiance of the shameless commercialism Valentine’s Day has become, this month’s theme is “No Love.”
Hello and welcome to the new and improved deadCENTER website! As you can see, this isn’t just a fresh coat of paint, it’s a complete rebuild. We’ve tried to make it easier to navigate, better for mobile devices, and hopefully pretty as well. The front page is similar to what you’ve grown to know and love from our old site – the latest news and announcements about the festival. This page, however, is what we’re really excited about. We’ve named it “filmCENTRAL” because that’s precisely what we are aiming for. We want this to be the central location for discussion about independent film and culture in Oklahoma.
Last fall as I was fulfilling my role as The Most Ironic Adjunct Professor Ever at Oklahoma Christian University,* I gave the students in my Print Media Design class a project to promote awareness of deadCENTER. The first step was to gauge their awareness of the film festival. Maybe two of the students had heard of it.
“Does it show, like, midnight zombie movies and stuff?”
“Maybe, but that’s not the focus of it or anything.”
“It sounds like a zombie movie festival.”
“It’s not.”
So I used last year’s Best Narrative Feature, Weather Girl, as an example of how “independent film” has a lot more to do with the process than the content.
Stories of Sundance
Ian, the deadCENTER Technical Guru of all things internety and webish, asked me to make an insightful appraisal of my recent trip to the Sundance Film Festival. Be forewarned, I’ve imbibed a veritable barrel of coffee, have been taking care of a sick child, and my humor has landed in the land of lollipops and shiny things. I did just use the words “internety” and “webish” too, so buckle up for my totally ridiculous blogtopia, Stories of Sundance.
Brian Hearn, Oklahoma City Museum of Art film director, went to Sundance this year. Hit the jump below to read about his trials and tribulations in Park City.
