Legendary BMX pioneer and favorite native son Mat Hoffman will help kick off the 10th annual deadCENTER Film Festival on Wednesday, June 9 with a special free, open-to-the-public outdoor screening of “The Birth of Big Air,” the highly acclaimed documentary about his life and career.

Academy Award nominee Spike Jonze and extreme sport fanatic Johnny Knoxville, along with director Jeff Tremaine, showcase the inner workings and exploits of the man who gave birth to “Big Air.” Partially shot in Oklahoma, the film was created for ESPN’s 30 for 30 series.

The kick-off celebration will include three intertwined events: a free, open to the public block party and movie screening; an exclusive fundraiser; and a VIP party.

• The 500 block of Broadway Ave. (Automobile Alley) will be closed to traffic for the block party beginning at 7 p.m. A huge movie screen will be the central focus of the free, public event which will feature live music, “rolling” entertainment, food and drinks.

• Hoffman is scheduled to attend the Friends of deadCENTER’s inaugural “redCENTER Lounge” fundraiser, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at RED Primesteak, 504 N. Broadway Ave. Tickets are $100 per person, and $1000 for a private booth for five with dedicated service. Tickets to the exclusive event include VIP lounge-style seating for “The Birth of Big Air,” a private bar, heavy hors d’ouevres and more. Space is limited. Call (405) 246-9233 for reservations or further details.

• A special VIP party will be held on Broadway for deadCENTER All-Access Pass holders. All-Access passes cost $125 and in addition to the opening night VIP party, includes access to all screenings, parties and panels for all five days of the festival. A 20 percent discount will be given to students who present a student ID. Purchase online at www.deadcenterfilm.org or at participating local retailers.

All special events will culminate at 9:30 p.m. for the Oklahoma Premiere of “The Birth of Big Air.”
