deadCENTER at SXSW: A Bad Movie, A Broken Movie

When you make a pal at a festival and promise to see their movie, you have to be ready for the awkward conversation that will inevitably follow once the film gets out.  Now if you are a rock-star publicist, you apparently understand that you won’t ask people what they thought of the movie you’re promoting.  Which is good, because Lebanon, PA. was ass.

After running from that theater as soon as the credits started, Cacky and I booked it back to the Paramount to catch Electra Luxx.  We met up with Chris Martin and his buddy Shawn in line – the Oklahomies are truly out and about this weekend.

About an hour and 15 minutes into the super funny, sexy world premiere attended by movie stars – the projector broke.  Broke.  Sound, no picture.  Lights up, people clapping, and the most darling director on the planet gets onstage and starts doing the jokes.

I gotta tell ya – I learned something this night.  If it was my world premiere at a 1200 seat theater at one of the top film festivals in the world, I would have thrown up, cried, screamed and thrown up some more. Precious, hilarious Sebastian Gutierrez, got on stage, started telling jokes, taking questions from the audience, brought his very gorgeous quartet of actresses on stage – he handled this disaster with so much style and humor … it was unprecedented.  I think the world loves this man now.  Grace under fire, live and in person at SXSW.

After the end of the film that didn’t end –they never got the projector up and running – we booked it over to the Man on a Mission party.  Which was awesome. Cacky tackled the astronaut himself and he was gracious and very interesting. I love billionaires. As that party was winding down, we made our way to some interactive party thrown by the state of Nebraska. There were a lot of tech-y fliers laying on tables along with sticky mustaches. Why? I don’t know. But don’t wear lip gloss and put on a sticky mustaches. I’m still pulling bristles off my lips.

Another day, another 3am stumble back. Will the girls make it to their screening at 11am? Stay tuned…
